Did you know?

The Guyanese Dollar (GYD) has a rich history that reflects Guyana’s colonial past and its journey to independence. First issued in 1839 as the currency of British Guiana, the early iteration of the dollar was part of a complex system of monetary units used within the British Caribbean territories. Over time, the currency evolved, mirroring the country’s path to becoming a cooperative republic in 1970. Intriguingly, despite being a relatively small nation, Guyana boasts one of the highest levels of biodiversity globally, and its abundant natural resources, including gold and bauxite, play a pivotal role in the strength of its currency.

The symbol for the Guyanese Dollar is $ or G$ to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies. Although relatively unknown to many, the GYD stands out by featuring vibrant banknotes adorned with imagery reflecting Guyana’s unique culture and natural beauty, such as the majestic Kaieteur Falls and indigenous wildlife. This distinctive approach to design not only celebrates the nation’s identity but also aims to strengthen its presence on the international stage.
